Small towns play a huge part in rural fiction and horror. Often, they are a character as important as any you might read during the course of a story. They shape the experience and expectations of the people in them. They carry history and secrets. Sometimes good and sometimes terrifying. And you can never know for certain what you see is all there is.
Are the shop owners friendly or are they harsh and unwelcoming? Do people the characters meet on the street seem afraid? Or even afraid for them? What's the local gossip tell you? Is there a town historian or librarian? An elderly curmudgeon who functions as a harbinger or a wise advisor?
Sometimes the danger presents itself before people make it into town. In my book Bluebud, A Collection of Fears, Jake and Susan stop at a roadside stand and meet an adorable old couple, Walter and Marie. Yet, no matter how attractive their wares, something odd is going on. You can find that story, and my other short story collection. Well Water and other odd tales, at Tiny Worlds Publishing.
I am proud to be part of Tiny Worlds Publishing. Check out the catalog and see what great books are on offer. This summer there are some exciting books coming out. Get on the mailing list so you can be notified when your next great read is about to be released. We're just getting started.
